EQuilibrium Maastricht

Alice Wellum

Where am I from?

My name is Alice Wellum. I have been practising martial arts for more than 20 years, primarily focusing on WuShu, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi. At Equilibrium Maastricht, I teach self-defence.

What I enjoy most about teaching in the dojo is that it is a tremendous space for people to grow. For example, our self-defence classes not only allow people to be stronger and more confident physically, but also cultivate mental fortitude and emotional awareness.

Outside of the dojo, I am a researcher and educator at Maastricht University, specializing in sexual violence prevention. My theoretical understanding of the topic informs my practice in the dojo, and vice versa.

What can I do?

I have been teaching women’s self-defence since 2014. The training I provide is influenced by my martial arts practice, women’s self-defence programs like WenDo, and a practical understanding of when and where violence is most likely to occur and how to protect oneself from it.

Currently, my focus is on teaching self-defense to women, as they are more likely to experience sexual violence compared to men. In the future, I hope to expand my classes to include genderqueer and non-binary individuals, as well as the broader LGBTQ+ community.

What can I do for you?

  •       Learn how to defend yourself in our women’s self-defence course or in a private session.
